Royd is 35 years old. He learned basic computer skills in prison, but when he got out after eight years, he realised that everything was being done online. He wanted to be more comfortable with society, yet it felt like he had returned to a different country. Until he joined his local library and attended computer courses.
Royd says: “These courses have broadened my horizons and given me a wider net to be able to look for work and to apply for jobs, I’ve been able to find old friends and it has given me confidence to carry on with my education.”
“Now I have finished the courses, I’ve now no fears of computers.”
Royd can now shop online and would also like to buy and sell online. He’s hoping to create his own website to eventually start and promote his own painting and decorating business.
Royd says: “The tutors have been so helpful, and I’ve learnt more in the first session than I had anywhere else. No one had ever given me the time and help that I’ve had since coming to these sessions”.
