Caroline Payne was pregnant with her second child when she decided that she wanted to be self-employed. She didn’t want to return to a full time job and miss out on her children growing up. Her previous work experience gave her the inspiration she needed.

“With a secretarial background and the need to work from home I decided to set up Chelmsford Virtual Assistants” explains Caroline. “I knew that I could help local businesses with their day to day administration”

Caroline heard about Essex Libraries Business Information Service when she attended a ‘Women into Business’ seminar run by the local enterprise agency and also a Business Link work-shop. “At each course I went to the speaker sung the praises of our local library as a great source of information and best of all it was free!”

Not just an enquiry service, the Library Business Information service also offers a range of free online business resources in local libraries. Some, such as COBRA with its comprehensive range of factsheets and business opportunity profiles, is also available to library members from their home PCs.

“I found the factsheets extremely informative and helpful and I can refer back to them whenever I need to. I’ve recommended them to my clients too. I really like the e-newsletter too, as it keeps me up to date on services available to local businesses like me.”

Today Caroline’s business is thriving. She knows she can access whatever information she needs to help her business to grow and is encouraging others to find out too.
