Public Libraries: Relevant and Resilient
The recent huge ground swell of public support for libraries reminds us all of the essential contribution that public libraries make to their communities.
The recent huge ground swell of public support for libraries reminds us all of the essential contribution that public libraries make to their communities.
To be sustainable today and in the future libraries must operate in the most efficient and relevant way. To reduce the impact that cuts will have on public library services, SCL is committed to helping local authorities improve processes and reduce back office costs. All resources are being explored and used through SCL’s network; volunteers, partnerships, alternative delivery models, and combined services. SCL will continue to help local authorities to abide by the 1964 Public Libraries Act, to provide a comprehensive and efficient public library service. As evidenced by the Wirral in 2009, the act still serves to ensure that libraries exist for local needs.
Libraries have often led the way in responding to change. Ten years ago libraries rolled out free public internet access for everyone in the UK. Today, libraries are racing to help get millions of people in Britain online and connected. Libraries will continue to evolve and offer the services that customers need to improve their lives.
Libraries are free and neutral spaces that bring people together to form true communities.
