Volunteering in Kent Libraries Leads to Job in London
Kent Library Volunteer helps people learn how to use the internet. And helped himself land a job in London through the experience.
Byron had been a Computer Buddy at County Central Library in Maidstone since January 2007. A recent graduate, Byron was job searching when he applied to volunteer. “My volunteering jobs can range from showing people how to use the Internet and email, to providing people with help on Microsoft programmes. I walk people through the programmes from scratch, so they learn the absolute basics first.
“This job as a Web Wizard has been an enormous help to me as in June 2007 I managed to secure a job in London as a help desk administrator. My library experience of customer service and IT support swung my job fortunes around. I am enjoying what I do, while at the same time carrying on my volunteering for as long as possible.”
